Join Asia Society Northern California online, on Thursday, February 16, 2023 from 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Pacific / Friday, February 17, 9:00 a.m. – 10 a.m. HK, for a virtual discussion on 'Unlocking the Potential of Hong Kong's Startup Ecosystem: A Comprehensive Analysis of Funding, Trends, and Challenges' with Edith Yeung, General Partner, Race Capital. The discussion will be moderated by Jacko Tsang, Director, Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office. 

Edith will unveil her comprehensive Hong Kong Internet Report, which provides an in-depth and wide-ranging examination of Hong Kong's startup scene. The report delves into the opportunities and obstacles facing the Hong Kong startup ecosystem, including the most well-funded startups, funding rounds, and venture investors. Additionally, it analyzes trends and offers recommendations. The report will also address the challenges facing Hong Kong such as the outflow of tech talent to other countries and the lack of investment in Hong Kong startups by Hong Kong investors.

This will be a webinar program; attendees will not appear on camera and will participate via the Q&A box.

SPEAKER BIOS

As Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in San Francisco, Ms Jacko Shun Man TSANG (Moderator) represents the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in fostering economic ties between Hong Kong and 19 states in the western part of the United States. Ms Tsang joined the HKSAR Government as Administrative Officer in 2004. She started in policy formulation and management of minor modes public transport. She then moved on to handling issues related to executive-legislative relations, assisting in the coordination of the Government’s legislative programme. 

In 2011, Ms Tsang joined the Transport and Housing Bureau to work on civil aviation policy, participating in the negotiations of air service agreements on behalf of the HKSAR Government and dealing with matters related to air transport licensing in Hong Kong. After spending four years in the field of aviation, Ms Tsang took up a position in the Civil Service Bureau assisting in the management of the Administrative Officer Grade in the Civil Service, where she spent three years handling the posting and training of Administrative Officers.

In 2015, Ms Tsang joined the Commerce and Economic Development Bureau. She first worked to bring the Competition Ordinance into effect, and then took up the position of Principal Assistant Secretary in charge of consumer protection policies, where she monitored the implementation of relevant laws to combat unfair trade practices and to regulate the safety of consumer goods. She was also heavily involved in policy analysis related to the proposal for a mandatory cooling-off period. Ms Tsang received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Wesleyan University, CT, majoring in Government. She is married with two children.

Edith Yeung is a General Partner at Race Capital - an early-stage Silicon Valley venture capital fund investing in all things infrastructure, creator of the Hong Kong Internet Report, founding member of FoundersHK - an non-profit organization with the goal to connect Hong Kong with Silicon Valley. 

Edith is the seed investor in Solana (has been dubbed one of the best venture investments of all time), Lightning Network, Agora.io, Placer.ai, RapidAPI, and 60 other amazing startups. Prior to Race Capital, Edith was a partner at 500 Startups, the world's most active early-stage fund and incubator which invested in Twilio, Credit Karma, Grab, and 2000 more companies. Before 500, Edith was the general manager at Dolphin Browser, a Sequoia Capital - backed mobile browser with over 150 million installs worldwide. Edith also worked with many Fortune 500 companies such as Siebel, AMS, AT&T Wireless, and Autodesk. 

She frequently speaks on venture capital, Silicon Valley and China technology and investment landscape. She is also a frequent guest lecturer at Berkeley and Stanford and commentator on BBC, CNBC, Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, SCMP, Techcrunch, etc.
